ZUBER, FL- Racers and race fans from across the southeastern United States will come together at Ocala Speedway this Friday, June 5th, for the 14th Annual Powell Memorial. Anticipation for the most prestigious late model race in Florida is always high, but after two consecutive weeks where nature has prevented racing at Florida's oldest and most historic speedway, there is no more exciting way to rekindle racing fever than to host an event that carries such tradition and respect.
While this is the 14th incarnation of the Powell Memorial, it will be the second consecutive year that the race will run on clay. And as was the case in 2008, the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series will be on hand with an all star field of dirt late model racers, ready to challenge the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast. The eventual winner of this year's Powell Memorial will collect $5000, thus ensuring plenty of hard competition for the cash. Ocala Speedway owner Michael Peters says that around 50 top late models are expected for this year's race.
Two supporting divisions will also take to the clay along with the late models, and both should bring a competitive field of local racers to share the spotlight. In addition to the UDLMCS, fans will get to see action from the toughest division at Ocala Speedway, the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Mini Stock Division will also be racing.
The grandstand gates will open at 5PM and fans are urged to come early for the best seats. Heat races will begin at 8PM with B-mains and features to follow. RV parking and overnight camping is available through prior arrangement with the speedway by calling 352-622-9400. For directions to Ocala Speedway, information about lodging, or any other questions, please call the track or visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.
